Going Green - Ken Mehlman and Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. Show How It’s Done

Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) was established by Henry Kravis and his business partner George Roberts in the 1970’s with some assistance from the First Chicago Corporation. Recently they have set up a novel green enterprise which concentrates not just on how lucrative a corporation is, but likewise on the environmental impact of the companies they buy.

Environmentally aware business practice became more broadly adopted a year ago when KKR’s Henry Kravis and the non-profit environmental advocacy group Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) merged. These companies aims to oppose key issues affecting the environment, including soil contamination, hazardous emissions, exorbitant water consumption, and hazardous chemical use.

Eco-efficiency (the term was initially introduced by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development WBCSD) provides the framework for their mission, using green techniques like reducing the intensity of materials, reducing the dispersion of toxic chemicals and using clean energy. The program was successful, but the KKR and EDF didn’t see the full advantages of the project until Ken Mehlman, the man in charge of the program, evaluated the program following a year in operation.

Much to everybody’s surprise, Ken realized that this program not only diminished ecological impact, but also increased the profits from all their business concerns too. Almost all of the commercial concerns linked with Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co and Ken Mehlman at present are actively participating in eco-efficiency principles. Considering that this group of businesses is valued at $86,000,000,000, you can see what a challenge this actually was. The initial Green Portfolio project has evolved far beyond its primary purpose and currently includes new initiatives. For instance, Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co got together with the EDF’s Climate Corps Program which teaches MBA students how to design and start cost-efficient, green principles.

In addition, Ken Mehlman has been in close collaboration with KKR to create metrics and other applicable systems that businesses can utilize to measure resources. With this information available, any business can assess their day to day activities and ascertain where any problems may be solved while at the same time seeing their progress.

Today’s business world has been altered permanently by the ground breaking work of Henry Kravis, the KKC, and the Environmental Defense Fund. These radical developments have set a benchmark for organizations in every industry and established that making profits need not entail the hefty price of damaging the environment.
