Botulinum therapy (abbreviated to Botox) is fast becoming a must amongst trendy Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming an important part of a beauty routine for people in the city.

Even so I never cease to be astonished when I hear the various half truths that surround this procedure.

I have included below some of the common errors that I encounter working as a physician at Star Cosmetic Medicine located in Pyrmont, Sydney.

Mistaken Belief no. 1: Botox can immobilize all my expressions!

There are around sixty muscles in the human face. These muscles ordinarily function harmoniously, but with time expression lines can appear. When an excess of Botox is injected facial muscles may become slightly less expressive. Most doctors would use relatively small doses to result in you seeming less tired, but still you will always keep your natural expression.

Therefore by injecting conservative amounts of the wrinkle injection in exactly the right tissues an expressive face is preserved whilst any wrinkles are minimised.

Mistaken Belief no. 2: Botox is a toxin!
This to some extent is correct. Its scientific term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Too great a quantity can end up in a decrease in muscle tone and even may cause sickness.

However to put the matter into perspective: an ancient pharmacist’s expression states that ‘everything is poisonous - all depending on the dose’. Any medication can make an individual sick in large enough dosages. In fact water can be fatal if you take too much.

Mistaken Belief no. 3: Botox will hurt!
The needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than your hair. Quite a few people have said that the injections aren’t as sore as getting bit by a mosquito. Definitely not in the same ball park as compared to having a blood test.

Mistaken Belief no. 4: I will lose feeling in my face!
This is totally false. Botox affects the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on sensate nerves. Botox just impacts on the ability to relax muscular tissues.

Mistaken Belief no. 5. You can’t stop getting Botox or else you might wrinkle faster than ever!
This is also incorrect.

The first treatment is effective for about 3 months. Subsequent injections tend to last longer. The lines will slowly reappear as the muscle returns to normal. Even So they definitely will not be deeper than before the treatment.

In fact the wrinkles should be be less pronounced than if you had never had Botox treatment - even if you never repeat the injections. Due to the fact that your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the therapy.
