History of Graduation Cap & Academic Robe
Graduation day ceremony is not complete without wearing graduation caps. Students and graduates wear a graduation robe and a cap and are awarding their qualification certificate by a guest of honor. These academic robes and the graduation caps go back in history. The early universities formed in Europe in the 12th century. Initially academic robes were worn to provide warmth to the students as most of the times these ceremonies were held as unheated ceremonies. Even though times have changed and the universities are holding the ceremonies in a closed hall, the tradition of using academic robe and the graduation hat is still follow.
Customized Academic Robe and Graduation cap
Initially, the caps used by only universities for passing out students but nowadays even kindergarten schools have graduation ceremonies and award young students and the ceremony is celebrating with much fanfare. The caps will have a round tubular top, which will fit in your head, and it specially designed to control the flow of your hair. The top of the graduation cap is always a flat rectangle. Earlier graduation caps never had braids. Nowadays, the academic robe and the caps designed as per the universities and even the color-coding of the trim customized. The universities and the schools are even customizing the academic robe with their names on that.
Color-coding and Accessories
Each academic institution / branch identified with different color. Although trims of the academic robes will be of different colors, the graduation caps always maintained in black. You get a Purple trimmed hood is for graduation in Law and Pink colored hood stands for graduation in Music, Kelly’s green for medicine and Apricot for Nursing. There is a colorful way of displaying cords in your academic robe. These cords are color-coded based on your graduation honors. There is a separate color coded if you get an honorary society membership with which either leadership or an outstanding performance in academics is recognized.
Tossing of graduation caps
There is an age long tradition of tossing the caps after the graduation ceremony. Although most of the times, only children and relatives get the caps. It is more or like a finder keeper’s situation. Although, nowadays some universities are coming out with a novel idea of stitching the students name and address inside the graduation cap so that, even if someone found it, they can hand it over to the original owner.
