Paralegal - The Last Rose of Summer
Throughout our representative republic, paralegals (also called legal assistants) have a number of professional organizations that have taken the role of “guardian angel”. One such organization; a relative newcomer, that has risen to national prominence very quickly (it began in 2003) is the American Alliance of Paralegals Inc (AAPI). AAPI’s fast ascent to prominence may be traced to the fact that it was the first national organization that focused primarily on the establishment of minimum educational requirements. In addition, members that wish to have a say in policy (given a vote) must meet particular guidelines through both real world experience and on an educational basis.
Intrinsic fundamental yardsticks to be aware of when assessing any paralegal program:
1. Teaching applicable, useful work skills in conjunction with cornerstone legal theory is an indispensable aspect of any quality paralegal school curriculum. Additionally, a solid paralegal degree program should also embrace everything from torts and business organizations to ethics and legal writing. Furthermore, paralegal courses should focus on enhancing students’ critical thinking abilities, improve and hone communication skills and prepare them emotional and psychologically to handle ethical issues.
2. Commitment by the faculty and the paralegal curriculum director to the importance of the paralegal in the whole legal system is a must. Additionally, they must have the proper academic credentials to be able to teach the subject. Ideally, the paralegal program director should have a law degree but if not, they should have some type of advanced paralegal degree. As for the instructors they should be experts in the subjects they are teaching. How they came to become an “expert” can be debated as to what is the best path but regardless of the journey they need to have the proper expertise.
3. A broadening number of paralegal schools and universities have made their entire paralegal degree training programs available online. However, it’s recommended that before any wanna-be student signs up they find answers to a few important points. First, how will the material be delivered? Will all lectures be live interactive video or DVD tele-courses, or text-based with access via the web or a combination thereof? Also, because of the nature of the learning it takes much more self motivation and discipline to compete the work. Do you have what it takes to learn online?
Even if down the road your goal is to become a lawyer, starting your professional life in law as a paralegal is a wise initial step. Earning your paralegal degree will allow you to get a foothold into the legal field, which in turn will expose additional opportunities. And then, down the road you can make a more informed decision as to whether or not to pursue your law degree or to keep working as a paralegal. In any case, opportunities will be many.
