Volunteering Your Time

Filed under: Better Business, Political Activism, Social — November 10, 2009 @ 10:47 pm

We all know that giving your time as a volunteer allows you to strengthen the bonds of your community as well as assisting the poor. Doing it yourself, however, freeing up the time to volunteer can consume time that could really be put to better use. And don’t you agree that if you had your colleagues working alongside you, you’d all enjoy yourselves more while volunteering? Grasping the importance of this problem, some companies are integrating organizing points to help their employees work for the community. One of the leaders in this is Adaptive Marketing LLC of Connecticut who developed shopping and financial benefits programs like Leisure Exclusives. If you think of company supported charitable effort, you probably think of blood drives, maybe a Christmas donation drive, but that’s simply no longer true. The staff members of Adaptive Marketing have been provided with the opportunity to participate in a full range of community initiatives with more and less effort required. For events like these, the times, locations and dates that had been arranged were posted, making it easy for employees to know what to expect, and how much time each event might specifically require from them.

It’s hardly volunteering if there’s no opportunity to select activities, of course. At Adaptive Marketing, the people who brought you Leisure Exclusives, employees are given the chance to choose from a diverse list of volunteer programs. When looking for things to do you see so many, after all; working with young adults, assisting with green programs, or supporting local artists to name but a few. The result is that Adaptive Marketing volunteers have opportunities to explore useful avenues in volunteer work and love joining in the process. Most often a company supported volunteer project — fundraising with a homeless shelter or helping out at a local school — is either for a one-off event or on a regular schedule in pursuit of a bigger goal. Staffers may well say they don’t have any free time, but usually even they can often free up the resources to help at an event lasting only a single day. Applying their expertise to help their community is a long-standing tradition at many commercial enterprises. A sense of community goodwill is generated by the projects undertaken by Adaptive Marketing’s staff members, and the staff members of companies like it, through these company supported projects. Another upside is, one of the benefits of volunteer work is the certainty that you’ve done something good and worthwhile — an upbeat feeling that enriches the entire business. Creating the opportunity to help employees set aside the time to volunteer is beneficial to everyone involved.
