A Taste of the Caribbean
Anyone who appreciates food will definitely be enamored by the Caribbean cuisine. The Caribbean is not just famous for its sun, sand and rum routine but also the spicy Caribbean cuisine. Each island here has a special cuisine to its name. It has been developed over the years by colonists and immigrants who have utilized local ingredients to form a distinct flavor.
One of the main reasons for this distinct flavor is the influence of colonial powers that ruled each of the islands over different periods of time. For example, in Bermuda’s Fairmont Hamilton Heritage Court an English afternoon tea is part of its culture and tradition. In the small town of Grand Case in St. Martin is a great place to savor French food with a Creole flair. The Dutch delicacies of Aruba and Curacao and the jerk chicken of Jamaica are part of the Caribbean cuisine which should be tasted by all food connoisseurs. Sofrito-based soups and sauces with fried plantains form an intrinsic part of the Caribbean cuisine from Puerto Rico. Local fare from the streets of San Juan includes spicy arrozo con pollo and seafood fritters.
With the abundance of marine life around all the islands, seafood enthusiasts will not be disappointed. The constant supply of fresh fish, crabs, and lobsters only enhance the flavors of the Caribbean cuisine. No meal is complete without fish. The fish is marinated in local spices and ingredients after which it is fried, stewed or steamed. Some favorite fishes from Puerto Rico include the red snapper and the dolphinfish.
In addition, the wide range of fruits and vegetables available here such as plantains, coconuts, mangoes, pineapples, and papayas form an essential part of the Caribbean cuisine. It mainly adds a whole lot of flavor to the main course and also helps to sweeten sauces. They can best be enjoyed as desserts. Fruits juices and rum also form a perfect combination for many cocktails.
