Sky Experiments with Fibre Optics

Sky seems to be one of the first UK operators which are taking an active interest in the advancement to next-gen technology.

According to reports, Sky recently commenced a series of technological experiments, testing the connectivity of fibre optics via phone exchange. Through the employment of green kerbside utilities, the new technology could be integrated much faster than before, bringing improved speeds and network quality from broadband providers to the region.

The new development comes in response to requests by Ofcom, when chief executive Ed Richards suggested a prompt deployment of fibre networks across the UK. According to Ed Richards, a UK-wide fibre optics network would allow for enhancement in overall standards across the country. These schemes would allow for a rapid dispatch of technology, due to its relative ease of installment.

Sky plans to link exchanges to telephone cabinets, the green boxes seen ubiquitously across the region. Previous installation procedures would involve the tearing of pavements, and would have taken much longer to reach its full potential.

This process will place convenient network control centers across the United Kingdom. These broadband networks would be easily accessible to households, and resident could receive up to 50Mbps, at the completion of the system.
